CHAPTER THIRTEEN

ALPHONSE WANTED desperately to go to the Strand.

“I’m sorry for the interruption, sir,” Hazel said from the door.

Alphonse and Anastasia stood at the landing of the attic stairs, and Hazel apologized bitterly in the attic, playing messenger for them. Anastasia and Alphonse refused to enter the realm of the sacrifice. They always did.

“That’s fine, Witch Hazel,” Theo mumbled, climbing off the foot of August’s bed and moving their game of chess to the floor. He shrugged limply, fetching his frock coat from the wingback chair. “They’ve got the patience of children sometimes, I swear,” he muttered with an exasperated sigh and a shake of his head.

August didn’t ask where he was going. Theo tipped a nod at him and then at Hazel before slipping out down the stairs and disappearing into the house below.
